Cebu City Traffic Office (CCTO) spokesperson Paul Gotiong is urging drivers to respect the pedestrian lanes.

CEBU CITY, Philippines — To help the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board in Central Visayas (LTFRB-7) enforce the student fare discount law, especially this school opening season, a top official of the Cebu City Transportation Office (CCTO) said they will facilitate complaints of those who are denied the discount.

CCTO executive director Paul Gotiong, in an interview, welcomed the request of the Cebu City Council to support LTFRB-7 by conducting random information drives and posting related advisories near schools and in PUV terminals.

“Perhaps, maybe we can put signages in our jeepney stops nalang siguro, and if ever sad g’yod there are any persons nga gi refuse, then they can report it to us also so we can make necessary actions or maybe call the attention of the operators involved,” he told CDN Digital.

To recall, the matter about the enforcement of 20-percent student fare discount has been recently brought up to the city council when Councilor and Committee on Transportation and Communication chairman James Anthony Cuenco submitted a resolution directing all public transportation operators, cooperatives, and companies to strictly comply with the grant of 20 percent discount on domestic regular fares to all students.

According to Cuenco, the Student Fare Discount Act, or  the Republic Act No. 11314, allows students to receive a 20-percent discount when they present their school IDs and other appropriate enrollment documents to drivers of all types of public utility vehicles.

Violators of this law may be penalized with the suspension of driver’s license for one month for first offense; two months for second offense; three months for third offense, and three months plus a fine of P1,000 for each of the subsequent offenses.
