VM Garcia eyes cashless modes of payments in Cebu City

CEBU CITY, Philippines—Cebu City Vice Mayor Raymond Alvin Garcia is pushing for an ordinance that would expand the use of cashless modes of payment for all Cebu City transaction fees, including payment for business taxes and real property taxes.

Garcia said this measure would “open the floodgates” for Cebu City government to accept cashless transactions.

“It will be more convenient and accessible for the tax payers because they can pay at the comfort of their homes; It will also potentially increase the revenue of the City of Cebu kay mas accessible, mas naay gana dayon mo pay on time ang atong mga kaigsoonan,” he said.

Currently, city tax payers have the option to pay online but it is only through the platform of the Landbank of the Philippines.

He said that it would also be beneficial for other platforms to participate and offer their services to the city’s constituents.

Garcia said he is planning to file the ordinance during their session after the Holy Week.

This ordinance will undergo review from the council’s Committee on Laws, Ordinances, and Styling. A public hearing would also follow.

Garcia said that once his proposed measure gets nod from the council and the mayor, the city government, could already enter into agreements with various e-wallet apps or platforms offering cashless transactions and payments.
